Winter Solstice

This is my favorite holiday. Maybe because no one pays attention to it. It gets lost among all the celebrations of Christmas, Hanukkah, Festivus, New Year’s Eve. This holiday sits tucked quietly away: the longest night of the year.

Quiet Time

I like this night because it’s quiet.

No one expects me to dress up. I don’t have to leave my house.

There’s no social pressure to participate in fun activities.

Me and My Dog

This night is a perfectly acceptable time to wear sweatpants and be alone with my dog. To reflect on all sorts of deep subjects. Or not.

Sandy does not like the dark. She is all for curling up into a warm ball once the sun sets. She knows this is a time to rest.

Big Plans

Tonight we will sit on the couch together. We’ll share some snacks. I’ll sip my glass of wine in the glow of the Christmas tree lights.

I’ll pet Sandy. She’ll pretend to ignore me once the snacks are gone.

But she will doze off, close by, her head resting against me. I am sure it is not all about the snacks.

Happy Tail Wags
