Getting Lost

It is easy to get lost when hiking if the area is unfamiliar and everything looks the same. And if you are not mindful.

It is easy to get lost in your thoughts, too.Getting lost in your thoughts when hiking usually lead to getting lost in real life.

At least it has for me. Of course, when realize you are lost, that will focus your attention in the present really fast. Unless you choose to berate yourself for your foolishness. Totally counterproductive.

You’re lost.

It’s time to find your way.

It's time to find your way

First stand still.

Take stock.

Make a plan.

Be mindful of your surroundings. Pay attention to the weather and the angle of the sun. You checked that before you started on the trail right?

You might use a compass. Or GPS. You might check a paper map. Use whatever resources you have at hand.

The same applies for getting lost in those repetitive thoughts. Don’t berate yourself. It happens.

Assess where you are. What you resources you have. And how you will use those to get back on track.

Just like a walk in the woods.
