Big Decisions and Equanimity

Can you make a big decision with equanimity?

Sandy makes her decisions and lives with the consequences. Equanimity.

But her decisions are not BIG decisions. Humans make decisions that affect them and their loved ones for years. Sandy mostly worries about missing snacks and the sunbeam drifting away while she naps.

Big decisions are scary

Humans can avoid big decisions by following the path of others. Parents, spouses, friends, even strangers are often eager to tell you how you should live your life.

“Be a doctor, not an artist.”

“Get an inconspicuous tattoo, not a nose piercing.”

But What if

What if you approach a big decision with equanimity?

What if you accept from the outset that your choice might be a good one or a bad one?

Should you join the great resignation?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Maybe you get a better job with a better manager and better pay.

Maybe you go to work for yourself.

Maybe you retrain to do the thing you've always wanted to do.

Maybe you find out no one wants your skills.

Maybe you start a business and it fails.

Maybe your dream job sucks.

You have some control over these outcomes, of course. You can set yourself up to succeed. Check out the job market, test the business landscape, do an internship.

Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn’t.

I don't know the answer to your big decisions.

I don't really know the answer to my own big decisions.

All I know is that what I've regretted are the chances I didn't take. I regret the times I did the right thing. I did the socially acceptable thing and it made me miserable.

The key to big decisions is equanimity. Make your choice. Accept whatever comes afterwards. With equanimity.
